New year, new classes…

Hard to believe that it’s time to start planning for classes in 2016. Ty will be teaching his Comic Book Bootcamp class, How To Make Comics, for the person who just wants to get the basic grounding of the skills needed to go off and make their own comics, digital or print. For those who have been working on comics for a while and would like to improve some of their skills, the second class will be How To Ink Comics.

For those who have asked, Ty will not be at this year’s one day Toronto comic convention in December; we’ll be in Delhi, India for a comic convention there! We’re looking at the schedule and hope to plan a drop-in for December for Bootcampers, past and future, to stop by and say hello, and show off work and portfolios. When we’ve decided on a date, I’ll be posting that here and on Facebook.

As always, if you’re interested in any of the classes let us know as soon as possible as they do fill up quickly (even when they’re two months away!).

Thanks!

Workshops Oct/Nov – Dec 2015

(updated with accurate link)

Just posted info on the next set of workshops. Currently, we’re waiting on an international comics convention to announce Ty as a guest so we have to keep quiet about it…but it’s the reason why there won’t be classes the first week of December. The missed week is noted in both class descriptions.

Go here to read up on UPCOMING CLASSES: OCTOBER/NOVEMBER – DECEMBER 2015.

ADDED: How To Write Comics Part One, WEDNESDAYS 7 – 10pm September 9 – October 21 2015.

The Thursday class for How To Write Comics is now full so the Wednesday class is now a go. It will be the exact same class, same lessons, same time, just a different day.

If you’re interested in this class, check the details here:  https://comicbookbootcamp.com/upcoming-classes-september-october-2015/  and let us know as soon as possible; this class is already half-filled.

Thanks!

September Scheduling

Hey Bootcampers! At this point, HOW TO WRITE COMICS Part One** is full, and we have one space left for HOW TO MAKE COMICS. We are keeping a wait list for both classes though, if you’re still interested.

**However…if we get enough names on a wait list for HOW TO WRITE COMICS, Ty will teach the class on a second day–Wednesdays 7 – 10pm September 9 – October 21 2015. If you are interested, please email us at comicbookbootcamp@gmail.com and let us know as soon as possible.

Information for both classes is HERE.

Learn How To Make Comics!

Just posted info on the classes for September and October; How To Make Comics (aka Comic Book Bootcamp) and How To Write Comics. Both of these classes fill up fairly quickly so if you’re interested, or know someone who is, please let us know as soon as possible so we can hold a spot for you (or them).

We’ve been approached about teaching classes in other locations and are giving that some consideration. At the moment though, Ty is sticking with his downtown location. Luckily, by September, the Pan Am Games and the resulting traffic snarls will be a long-distant memory!

Ty will have a table at FanExpo Canada September 3 – 6 2015. If you have any questions about classes, or would like to have your work assessed, he will be more than happy to talk to you.

Upcoming classes…

As some of you may be aware, Ty Templeton suffered a heart attack last week. Although serious, he is now recovered enough to be back home. As his doctor’s advice was to start slow, Ty has decided to push back the start date to the next session. HOW TO WRITE FOR COMICS PART TWO will now start May 5, and end June 16. HOW TO MAKE COMICS will start May 7 and end June 18.

We still have spaces in the writing class but you need to have taken Part One and/or How To Make Comics (aka Comic Book Bootcamp Part One). There is no prerequisite for How To Make Comics but there are only three spaces left so let us know asap if you would like to take it.

This and That…

Too busy to think up creative titles today in the Land of Bootcamp. Trying to plan out the schedule for the next couple of months…

January-February classes started last week. There are still a couple of spaces available in HOW TO INK COMICS; if you’re interested and let us know pretty much RIGHT NOW! Ty can catch you up on what you missed last week, and you can start in on the second class this Thursday. comicbookbootcamp@gmail.com

FRIDAY JANUARY 30, 7 – 10pm, COMIC BOOK CREATORS ASSEMBLE!!

We had our first Bootcamp get-together a couple of months back and had a loud raucous fun gathering. Bootcamper Shane Kirshenblatt offered up his event space, BACK SPACE TORONTO, for future gatherings (until the end of April, when it closes). As it’s a much larger space, we’ve opened up the gatherings to anyone in the Toronto comics community who would like to join us. Come meet other creators, pro and just-getting-started… network, share stories, check out each other’s work. Ty will be doing portfolio reviews during this event so feel free to bring yours. Reviews will be done publicly for all to see, as watching someone else’s review can be as much of a learning experience as having your own done.

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 7, 11AM – 11PM, 12 HOUR TORONTO COMIC BOOK MARATHON

I will be hosting a twelve hour comics marathon at the BACK SPACE TORONTO (again, with much thanks to Shane Kirshenblatt for donating use of the space). The event is open to anyone who wishes to participate, but I do need to know how many chairs I’ll need (in case I have to import more) so PLEASE EMAIL ME AND LET ME KNOW IF YOU’D LIKE TO PARTICIPATE! Sorry for shouting, but I wanted to get your attention! Email me, Keiren, at comicbookbootcamp@gmail.com. You can work solo or as part of a team.

This is a relaxed easy-going gathering; come hang out, work on a comic… do an analog comic, plan a book, work on a webcomic. Work with whatever media you like; we’ve had people work digitally, with collages (soooooooo cool, Mr. Ricky Lima!), with ink-stamped letters, and more. Bring whatever materials you’d like to work with. There are some outlets in the room if you have devices which will need charging. If you’re planning to listen to music or shows whilst working, please bring headphones.

We will have a SMALL fridge available if you’d like to bring snacks. We’ll have coffee and tea available, and the neighbourhood is full of great restaurants and shops (grocery store only a couple of blocks away, Burrito Boyz just a few doors down!).

So, just email me if you’re planning to participate! comicbookbootcamp@gmail.com.

And! I’ve just posted the info on March and April’s classes, HOW TO WRITE COMICS PART ONE, and HOW TO DRAW HEADS, HANDS AND FACES. The writing class tends to fill very quickly (and I’ve had people asking about it for months) so let us know if you’d like to be in either or both of ’em.

Bootcampers in The Wild

A quick scroll through my social media shows Bootcampers are busy, creative people:

James Cooper is writing and directing his first feature film. His latest short film, Interview With a Time Traveler is available for viewing online.

cover_fullBootcampers Todd Sullivan, Christopher Bird, Nelson da Rocha, Stephany Lein, Oliver Ho, Brice Hall, BC Holmes, Greg Jensen, and Daniel Reynolds some of the creators involved in Toronto Comics Anthology, a book that sprang out of a casual suggestion by Ty Templeton. The cover was done by Adam Gorham. The creators and founders of TCA were so impressed with the enthusiasm of the participants and the readers that they are moving ahead with Volume Two.

Adam Gorham has been a busy busy artist! As well as the cover for the first volume of Toronto Comics Anthology, he did a variant cover for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters #2 (IDW), available this week at your LCS. Check Adam’s blog, A Princely Dreadful, to find out when his next TMNT/Ghostbusters covers (for #3 and #4) will be out.TMNT-Ghostbusters-02_RE-Gorham

While you’re at your LCS, check for a copy of Zero #12 (Image), written by Ales Kot, art by the one and only Adam Gorham!

Al’Rashad: City of Myths, a webcomic written by Christopher Bird is still ongoing; new page posted each week.

Meaghan Carter has completely finished her webcomic, Take Off! It is now available in three volumes.

(Bootcampers:  please email me at comicbookbootcamp@gmail.com if you have any work you’d like to promote–Keiren)

Fall classes!

Yep, it’s still summer–and there’s lots to go, no worries! But we’ve had so many people asking when Ty would be teaching his intro classes, that we decided to post ’em early. Starting September 9, Ty will be teaching HOW TO MAKE COMICS (previously known as COMIC BOOK BOOTCAMP). HOW TO WRITE COMICS (formerly known as WRITING FOR COMICS) begins on Thursday September 11.

Check the page for all relevant details and let us know as soon as possible if you’re interested in either of these classes; these two fill up very quickly.
